I started Bloomreef because the numbers on our Impact page aren't abstract to me — they're the actual trajectory we're on. Coral reefs half gone. Ocean dead zones quadrupling. The air holding more carbon than it has in millions of years. And underneath all of it, quietly, the food we eat carrying less of what it used to.
None of these are separate problems. They're one problem, playing out in the ocean and on land at the same time. So the fix has to work the same way — one system, doing several jobs at once: growing seaweed that pulls carbon out of the water and puts oxygen back in, restoring coral reefs beneath it, and turning what we harvest into food, fertilizer, protein, and living soil again.
We are very early. There is no working prototype in the water yet — what you've seen on this site is the design, the engineering plan, and the beginning of the patent work. We are actively raising funding right now specifically to build and test our first real structures, in partnership with marine research institutions, as fast as we responsibly can.
I'm not going to pretend this is a small undertaking, or that it will be quick. Ocean restoration infrastructure is genuinely hard — harder than most software problems, harder than most hardware problems, because the ocean doesn't care about your deadlines. But the alternative is watching the numbers on our Impact page keep getting worse. I'd rather build.
